Turning the ordinary into cool
LONDON - Before I start, this was my business idea first. Or at least I’d like to think so. But the company, The Fine Matchbox Company, has beaten me too it. I found these matches at a shop a few days ago and I love the concept. Instead of just having boring matches, they’ve jazzed them up and made them look cool. The matches are much longer, have colourful tips, the box is bigger, comes with an interesting design and even entertains you with a poem on the back. So much fun.
The shop keeper tells me that as soon as the new stock comes in each week, they sell very quickly. It took me less than 5 seconds to decide to buy them even though they’re £5…not your typical price for a box of matches, but it’s the small luxuries in life that get you through the recession. I think they call that the lipstick factor. Here’s the box that I purchased.

A fun way to sell matchboxes, don’t you think?

The designs look almost retro. I love the swooping bird. It reminds me of the work by our NZ artist, the late Don Binney.
